What is kinesio tape (KT)? *KT is a therapeutic, elastic, adhesive tape that stays on the skin for 3-5 days.
*By using the rebound of the tape, the practitioner is able to lift the skin and give a
directional pull for various applications.
*KT works with proprioceptors in the skin to
provide enhanced feedback to the brain.
*KT is hypoallergenic and latex-free.
Good candidates for KT application:
*Muscles that are overpowered or weak: e.g. patellar tracking issues caused by overpowered vastus
lateralis. KT can inhibit lateralis from firing as “aggressively” or activate the medialis, restoring balance
to the quads, allowing the patella to track correctly. Works similarly with tennis elbow, golfers elbow,
supraspinatus tendonopathy, shortened pecs/stretched rhomboids, etc.
*Neuromuscular re-ed/repattering: Good for clients with stubborn problems that you are helping, but
need that extra help using the affected area correctly to prevent return to previous condition: keeping
shoulders/knees/ankles in proper alignment, continued inhibition of tight muscles, activation of weaker
muscles, upper cross syndrome, etc.
*Pain: can lift an area that is in pain due to compression, giving immediate relief.
*Mechanical correction: rotational issues, arch support, displaced humerus, etc. (These applications should
be done with caution to longer distance athletes. If the assessment is incorrect, they will put thousands of
reps through a misaligned joint and can hurt more than help. )
*Harder to treat issues: low back pain, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, etc.
*Lymphatic drainage assistance of acute injuries: sprains, bruises, etc.
Considerations of KT: *It’s only as good as the assessment.
*Excessive body hair needs to be trimmed/shaved in affected area(s).
*Skin must have good integrity.
*Caution needed when being removed.
Advantages of KT: *Neuromuscular re-ed/repatterning.
*Proprioceptive feedback.
*Longevity (3-5 days).
*Excellent reputation among some athletic communities, as seen in the Olympics, written about by Lance
Armstrong, etc.
Disadvantages of KT: *Does not replace good Myofascial work to remove congestion, scar tissue, trigger points, etc.
*Hairy clients need to shave/trim.
*Care needed when removing.
*Skepticism of some clients.
